What Is Hydro-Jetting? The Professional Solution to Serious Drain Clogs

Hydro-jetting is one of the most powerful tools in a professional plumber's arsenal — and one of the most misunderstood. If you've been dealing with recurring clogs, slow drains that won't stay clear, or a main sewer line with years of buildup, hydro-jetting may be exactly what your plumbing system needs.

What Is Hydro-Jetting?

Hydro-jetting is a professional drain and sewer cleaning method that uses highly pressurized water — typically between 1,500 and 4,000 PSI — to scour the inside of pipes clean. A specialized nozzle is inserted into the pipe and water is propelled in multiple directions simultaneously: forward to break up obstructions and backward to flush debris toward the sewer main.

What Hydro-Jetting Can Remove

Unlike snaking, which punches a hole through a clog, hydro-jetting removes the clog entirely and cleans the pipe walls. It effectively removes grease and fat buildup in kitchen drain lines, mineral scale and hard water deposits, soap scum and hair accumulation, sand and sediment, and even tree roots (when used in combination with a mechanical cutter for larger roots).

When Is Hydro-Jetting the Right Choice?

We recommend hydro-jetting when: a drain clog keeps recurring despite multiple snaking attempts, you have a main sewer line that's partially blocked or moving slowly, you're preparing to inspect or line a sewer pipe (a clean pipe gives a clearer camera image), you have a grease trap or commercial kitchen drain that needs deep cleaning, or you've purchased an older home and want to start with clean pipes.

Is Hydro-Jetting Safe for All Pipes?

Hydro-jetting is safe for most pipes in good condition — including PVC, ABS, cast iron, and clay sewer pipes. However, it's not recommended for pipes that are already severely cracked or collapsed, as the pressure could worsen existing damage. That's why we always perform a camera inspection before recommending hydro-jetting on older or potentially damaged sewer lines.

Hydro-Jetting vs. Snaking: Which Do You Need?

For simple, first-time clogs in good pipes, snaking is often the right and most economical choice. For recurring clogs, main line cleaning, or situations where you need the pipe walls truly clean (not just a hole punched through), hydro-jetting is significantly more effective. Our technicians will assess your situation and recommend the appropriate method.
